COVID-19 Hackathons

With the global outbreak of COVID-19 and the race to stop the spread of the disease, communities of tech professionals, data scientists, healthcare professionals, designers, researchers and entrepreneurs are coming together online to collaborate, innovate and quickly find solutions through hackathons. There are many hackathons taking place across Europe; below is a list of current and upcoming hackathons which we will keep updated.

Hack the Crisis Berlin

Ongoing

Objective - Use the platform to share ideas and projects to see what challenges others have identified. There is a vast range of possible actions our community can take to stop the spread of COVID-19 – and help society better cope with the current situation. These inlcude both analog and digital initiatives. We’re gathering ideas from various areas, like: Information and communication; Social cohesion; Models, simulations and prognoses; Hardware (e.g., 3D printing, sensors, medical technology); Education, colture and leisure; Economy and mobility.


Who can participate?


Everyone! It doesn't matter what your academic or professional background is, and we're welcoming of individuals as well as teams. Perhaps you'll find some new collaborators on this platform. To boost possibilites for collaboration and cooperation, make use of our Slack chat for the exchange about projects, questions and challenges. Here you can get together as a team, work on solutions or discuss questions. We have set up one channel per category, but you are welcome to continue organizing independently.

Hack the crisis Finland

20 - 22 March - closed

Objective - Hack the Crisis Finland is an online hackathon organised by local companies, startups and tech communities, supported by the Finnish government.


This is a call to action to each and everyone to participate in the fight and it is inspired by our southern neighbors from Estonia, who started the movement with their Hack the Crisis.

1) EpidemiAI - Addressing the information gap of researchers, policy makers and citizens with one single service, 2) COVID-19 Scenario Planner - The Advanced Scenario Planner is free, browser-based service with variety of future scenarios created by the industry experts and crowd, 3) Safe Zone - The service helps (risk group) people to move outside by giving information on areas where are less people, 4) Save restaurants - Gift card website for quarantined restaurants, 5) Kauko App - An easy-to-use, all-in-one remote educating app for elementary school students aged 6-8 years old

Hackathon to help the vulnerable

14-15 March - closed

Objective - Preventing loneliness in Corona times. 

A hackathon to support the millions of vulnerable people who are going to become lonely and isolated as COVID-19 spreads.

Outcomes: Explore joy (https://explorejoy.co.uk/): Support for people self-isolating.


ExploreJoy makes it easy to refer a person into friendly community group. They can find a service by browsing through categories and applying filters to find the right service. Use the standard referral form to make an instant referral to a service provider. Track whether the referral was accepted and whether the referral was attended.

3 - 5 April

Objective - MIT is hosting a series of challenges to empower YOU to take action on the COVID-19 crisis. 


Upcoming Events Latin America vs COVID-19 June 19-21: Latin America vs. COVID-19 virtual hackathon, a 48-hour event to build solutions that address the most pressing issues of the COVID-19 crisis in Latin America.


Hack the crisis (Accelerate Estonia )

13 -15 March - closed

Objective - Ideas that are prototypable in 48h and help the crisis + give Estonia the edge in the post-crisis world 

Outcomes: 1) Zelos - Connecting people at risk with volunteers via call center, 2) Ventit Breathing apparatus, 3) Vanemuine - medical volunteer management database, 4) Share Force One - workforce sharing platform that connects B2B sides for temporary workforce exchange, 5) Corona-tracker by Velmio

Hackaday - Hackaday.io (hardware development community)

12 March - ongoing

Objective - Design and deploy open scource ventilator. 

Other problems that will be discussed/worked on:

  • Can you make algorithms to determine if a person needs a ventilator? 

  • Can we recycle n95 masks? 

  • Can we make n95 masks at home? 

  • Workers also require a negative pressure tent for housing patients. This will be especially useful if we need to build treatment facilities in gyms or office spaces. 

  • Lastly if you’re a medical professional, can you train people how to help?

Hackvirus

Outcomes: 1) app for iOS / Android - patient self-registration + help doctors connect with medics and other backup staff, 2) We are ready - initiative to connect volunteers with health education to hospitals and other health institutions.

Observational Health Data Sciences and Informatics (OHDSI)

26 - 29 March

Objective - Virtual study-a-thon to inform healthcare decision-making in response to the current global pandemic.

Outcomes: A four-day global collaboration within the Observational Health Data Sciences and Informatics (OHDSI) community designed and began executing studies on an international set of observational health databases (including insurance claims and electronic health records) to aid decision-making during the current COVID-19 pandemic.
