Background
Centro, or Central Portugal has a population of 2.3 million. The region has three public universities: the University of Coimbra, the Aveiro University; and the University of Beira Interior. There are also five state-run polytechnical institutes: Castelo Branco Polytechnical Institute; Coimbra Polytechnical Institute; Guarda Polytechnical Institute; Leiria Polytechnical Institute; and Viseu Polytechnical Institute.
S3 priorities include a focus on health and well-being and building on strong Institutions (hospitals, HEIs and research), natural resources and assets and a focus on ageing. The region is involved in a number of major initiatives including In2Genome, OncoAlvo, and GenomePT.
